The wild rivers and mountains of Alaska beckoned John Schauer to the far north. As a wilderness guide, John has led remote river and backpacking trips in the Brooks Range since 1986. Thirty years of experience as a natural sciences educator in Fairbanks provide intimate understanding of the rugged but fragile ecosystems he loves to explore. He has paddled more that 80 Alaskan rivers in whitewater kayak, canoe, raft, and packraft. During the winters, John is an avid ski-jorer and Nordic skier. His wife, Karen, and their sons, Paul and Karl, share John’s love of exploring Alaska’s wilderness.
